Stronger Pressure. Reliable Hot Water. Professionally Installed.
If your showers lose pressure the moment someone turns on a tap elsewhere in the house, the issue may not be your boiler – it could be your hot water system. An unvented cylinder installation may significantly improve performance, provided your incoming mains supply is suitable.
Harpers Plumbing and Heating installs unvented hot water cylinders across Bishop’s Stortford, Dunmow, Takeley, Sawbridgeworth, Harlow, Saffron Walden and the surrounding areas of North Essex and East Hertfordshire.

What Is an Unvented Cylinder?
An unvented hot water cylinder is a sealed system fed directly from the mains water supply. Unlike traditional vented systems, it does not require a cold water storage tank in the loft. Instead, it stores hot water under mains pressure, allowing it to be delivered to taps and showers at a pressure similar to your incoming supply.
Traditional vented cylinders rely on gravity from a header tank to distribute hot water, which limits pressure and flow rate. When multiple outlets are used at once, performance can drop significantly.
Unvented systems typically provide stronger and more stable pressure than gravity-fed systems. However, overall performance still depends on the available mains pressure and flow rate to the property. If the supply is adequate, multiple outlets can be used at the same time with far less drop in performance compared to a vented setup.
Unvented cylinders are commonly installed alongside a system boiler, which heats water and sends it to the cylinder for storage rather than producing hot water on demand like a combi boiler. This arrangement works particularly well in larger homes or households with higher hot water demand, where a combi boiler may struggle to maintain consistent flow across several outlets.
That said, unvented cylinders can also work with regular (heat-only) boilers in certain configurations. The most suitable setup depends on the property, pipework, and water supply.
The Benefits of Upgrading to an Unvented Cylinder

Improved pressure and flow
Because the system is mains-fed, showers and taps can operate at much higher pressure than gravity-fed systems – assuming the incoming supply is sufficient. This can make a noticeable difference in homes with multiple bathrooms.
No loft tank required
With no cold water storage tank, loft space is freed up and there’s no risk of tank-related issues such as freezing, contamination, or overflow problems.
Better performance for busy households
Unvented cylinders are well suited to homes where several outlets may be used at once. While total flow is still limited by the mains supply, performance is generally far more consistent than with gravity-fed systems.
Flexible installation
Unvented cylinders can be installed in airing cupboards, utility rooms, garages, or other suitable internal locations, provided there is appropriate drainage for safety discharge pipework and adequate space for maintenance access.
Modern insulation standards
Most modern unvented cylinders are factory-insulated to high efficiency standards, helping retain heat effectively and reduce energy consumption. When paired with an efficient boiler, they provide a reliable and cost-effective whole-home hot water solution.
Is an Unvented Cylinder Right for Your Home?
You may benefit from an unvented cylinder if you:
- Have more than one bathroom
- Experience low pressure from a gravity-fed system
- Want to remove your loft cold water tank
- Are upgrading or renovating your heating system
However, not every property is automatically suitable. Unvented cylinders require adequate mains pressure and flow rate to perform correctly. In some cases, upgrades to pipework may also be recommended.
Harpers will assess your property and water supply before making any recommendations, ensuring the system is appropriate and compliant.
