If your Baxi boiler has suddenly locked out and is flashing a strange combination of letters and numbers, you are not alone. It is one of the most common reasons people call for a boiler repair service, usually first thing on a cold morning when the heating has packed in.
Baxi error codes are your boiler’s way of telling you something is wrong. Some are minor and can be sorted in a few minutes. Others point to problems that need a Gas Safe engineer. The key is knowing which is which so you do not reset it repeatedly and make things worse.

What Baxi error codes are telling you
Modern Baxi boilers are full of sensors. They constantly check water pressure, temperature, ignition, fan speed and flue performance. If something falls outside a safe range, the boiler shuts itself down and displays a fault code.
That code is not random. It narrows the issue down to a specific area. For example, low system pressure will trigger a different code to an ignition failure or overheating problem.
I often get asked, “Can I just reset it and see if it works?” Sometimes yes. But if the fault comes straight back, the code is there for a reason. Treat it as a clue rather than an annoyance.
How to read the fault code on your Baxi display
Most modern Baxi boilers have a small digital display on the front. When there is a fault, you will usually see a code starting with E followed by numbers, or occasionally something like H02.
If the screen is blank but the boiler is not working, check:
- Is the boiler switched on at the fused spur?
- Has the fuse tripped?
- Is there a power cut locally?
If the display is lit and showing a code, make a note of it before you press anything. That information helps massively if you end up calling an engineer.
Most common Baxi fault codes and what they mean
E1 – Low water pressure
This is probably the one I see most in homes around Harlow and Chelmsford. E1 usually means your system pressure has dropped too low.
On most Baxi models, pressure should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it drops below that, the boiler will not fire up.
E110 – Safety thermostat operated
This code points to overheating. The boiler has shut itself down because the water inside has got too hot.
It can be caused by poor circulation, a blocked heat exchanger, air in the system or a faulty pump. This one usually needs investigating properly rather than just resetting.
E119 – Extremely low system pressure
Very similar to E1 but more severe. The pressure is well below the safe operating level. Often there is a small leak somewhere on the system or a radiator has been bled without topping up.
E125 – Circulation fault
This means the boiler is not detecting correct water flow. It could be a pump issue, a blockage, sludge build-up or air trapped in the system.
Older heating systems in Bishops Stortford properties with original pipework are more prone to this, especially if they have not been powerflushed or serviced regularly.
E128 – Flame failure
The boiler has tried to light but failed. This can happen if the gas supply is interrupted or if there is an ignition or detection issue.
Check if your gas hob works. If it does not, it may be a supply issue rather than the boiler itself.
E133 – Gas supply or ignition fault
This is another common lockout code. It usually means the boiler has attempted ignition several times without success.
Sometimes after a gas meter has been changed or the supply interrupted, air in the pipe can trigger this code.
E160 – Fan fault
The fan helps expel gases safely through the flue. If this code appears, the boiler is not happy with the fan’s operation.
This is not a DIY fix. The casing should not be removed by anyone who is not Gas Safe registered.
E168 – Internal boiler fault
E168 is more general. It can relate to a sensor issue, PCB fault or internal wiring problem.
If this one keeps appearing, it needs proper diagnostics with the right equipment.
H02 – Central heating mode
H02 is not actually a fault. It simply means the boiler is in heating mode. I have been called out to this before and the “problem” was just the boiler doing its job.
Quick DIY checks for common codes
There are a few safe checks you can do before picking up the phone.
- Low pressure (E1 or E119): Repressurise the system using the filling loop. Bring it back up to around 1.2–1.5 bar when cold, then reset the boiler.
- Ignition faults (E128 or E133): Check other gas appliances work. If you have a prepayment meter, make sure it has credit.
- Recent radiator bleeding: If you bled radiators and did not top up the pressure, that may be the cause.
- Frozen condensate pipe in winter: If it is below freezing and the pipe outside is blocked with ice, carefully thawing it can sometimes clear the fault.
If the boiler fires up and runs normally after these checks, keep an eye on it. If the pressure drops again within days or weeks, there is likely an underlying issue.
Fault codes that require a Gas Safe engineer
Any fault relating to gas supply, fan operation, overheating or internal components should be left alone.
In particular:
- E110 overheating faults
- E125 circulation problems that persist
- E160 fan faults
- E168 internal errors
Taking the case off a boiler without the right qualifications is unsafe and illegal. Beyond safety, modern Baxi boilers need proper testing and sometimes manufacturer-specific parts.

How regular servicing prevents recurring faults
Many of these codes are avoidable.

I often see boilers that throw repeated E110 or E125 codes simply because they are clogged internally or the system water is poor quality. Regular servicing and, where needed, system cleaning keeps everything circulating properly.
